Oh my! Where do I begin? I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and honestly can't wait to go onto book 2. This is a steampunk genre. The first book I have ever read in this genre. The only reason, I didn't give it 5 stars was because of the repeated errors found throughout the book. Otherwise, it would have a solid 5 stars. The plot is fast paced and easy to read, minus the errors which kind of throw you out of the story for a moment. I would recommend the author to have another look through and fix these. There is one where she called one of the characters whose name is Varik by Virak.
The book is written in 1st person and you, as the reader, get to delve into Synn's mind, what he's feeling and what he's thinking. The author did a fantastic job with this. She did a fantastic job with all the characters. I have read books where some of the characters are so similar to each other, you grow bored.
After his Family the El'Asim are reunited with the Ino Family. These two families are joined together by marriage. Almost from the moment, Synn steps foot on a letharan from his air ship, the story line thickens. The Hands have struck. He and his father board their ship to try to draw away the Hands, who are more technologically advanced than the Families.
Synn is soon forced into being a prisoner to one of the 4 Queens of the Hands. The Hands and the Families are at war and have been for quite a while. The Hands have been systematically wiping out the Families. And, the Families hide from the Hands, but it's getting worse and worse for them.
While Synn is a prisoner to Queen Nix, it is not pretty what happens to him here. She eventually compulses him, meaning she has control over him. And when he does escape, he is compelled to go back to her, but manages to fight it. Now, with the help of the Families, mostly his mother, he brings the fight to them.
There is so much more involved in the book. I don't want to go into too much detail and ruin the wonderful world for you. Read the book and enjoy the story. You won't be disappointed.

FALL OF SKY CITY is an ambitious debut for author S.M. Blooding. To start, the cover of this book is phenomenal, very eye-catching. Her world building skills are amazing although I did have a hard time trying trying to picture the letharans, but that did not take away from my enjoyment of the book. The story is a wonderful mix of fantasy and steampunk and moves along at a fast clip.
Because of all the action in the book, I found that some of the secondary characters were a bit flat, Nix, in particular. She was portrayed as just evil, but why was she so evil. What was her back story and why was she so obsessed with everyone "loving" her? I would have liked to learn what made her "tick." Synn, on the other hand, was very well written. He's a young man who is a bit naive, but then he's captured and forced to endure unimaginable torture at the hands of Queen Nix. He matures quickly and has an inner fortitude that keeps him going. I knew what was going to happen before the ending, but it was still an enjoyable story. No spoilers here. You'll have to read the book to find out what happens to Synn. Fans of fantasy and steampunk will thoroughly enjoy this book. Recommended.
Book 1 of the Devices of War Series. I really liked this book! The story is set in a world that seems to be starting over. The kingdom has overturned many leaders and each one is more brutal than the previous. Queen Nix, the most brutal one of all is in power now. She's killed off many of the remaining "7 Families" & stole all of their technology. Now she's out to purge the remaining families. Their choices are servitude to her or die & even then, she's still killing. The only ones she saves are those with marks. Marks are tatoos that form on their body when they come into their element of power (earth, water, air, etc). Synn, born of the match between two tribes of the families1side, his father with the power of air. He is the leader of their tribe & they live and survive in the air on ships that fly by sails not gas. Second side, his mother with the power of earth. She is the leader of those who live in the Lethara with her, the Ino tribe. The Lethara is a giant octopus-like creature that they have built cities within. Queen Nix captures Synn & he must watch while his father & children of his best friends tribe are burned alive. Synn becomes her boy-toy. All he wants is his freedom before she consumes his soul & to save his people from her.
I love the world this writer has created! I also love the characters. I do wish that the other characters had more depth. the conversations are always between them and Synn. They do not have conversations between each other or their own private thoughts. I would encourage the author to give them more of an identity; now it's all about Synn. I'm excited to see what happens in book 2. Reader audience should be older teens--17+ (because of sexual references & torture). Note This, also was categorized as a Steampunk genre, but in the book, they didn't talk about machines in the different places using steam to run their machines the airships didn't, the Letharan didn't, and Sky City had the most advanced technologies with gas, jelly worms, etc., but not from steam. So I'm not sure it's correct to have this book in the Steampunk Fantasy genre. (Lol..but perhaps there's more to the category than just this.😉 who knows. Or... Maybe I just missed it in the book!😳😃)
Also, just a note (from my perspective only!! Please don't judge! 😉 ) this book is normally ~$5. I got lucky and found it on my Ereader Deals; I would never have bought this book for this, especially since this author is basically an unknown (I say this with the upmost respect! Sorry. ( ) So even tho I would love to continue on, it's not worth the $5 tag for me. $2.99, yes. Im sooooo bummed!! I'm going to be one of those unfortunate souls waiting & hoping for a deal on book 2. For those of you where money is no object, go for it. I predict you'll really like the book!
