For the most part, this is an enjoyable read. The action is a little wooden and scripted, the story flow is fairly straight and uniform, but the story itself is compelling. It's not that the author isn't a good writer. There are excerpts throughout the book that will almost startle you as they bloom off the page. No, it's truly like someone took notes during a Shadowrun campaign, then did their best to journalistically recall them, while occasionally waxing poetic over pieces of the adventure that particularly appealed to them. That being said, I can overlook the formulaic, almost journalistic approach to the ongoing sequences of the book for the appeal of the larger story arc. I truly love the mystery of the underlying script, the hidden truth of evil in this world that is so very similar to our own. The story may distract, but the mystery keeps us coming back.
This book (and series) is worth the time it takes to read it.

As an avid reader of Urban Fantasy, sometimes you may feel like you've gotten to the point where plot lines, characters, and myths begin to intersect and repeat themselves. However, this series does not belong to be grouped into the "I can't believe I spent $5.99 on this mess" category. Meding introduces a heroine who kicks major butt and has been hardened by her past experiences, however she is not without limitations and is portrayed as a multidimensional character, who grows as the storyline unfolds. As a former hunter of supernatural beings, Stone has to figure out how to live in someone else's body and reconcile her own feelings with those of the body that she inhabits now. With a second chance at life come new challenges and opportunities; for Evangeline these come in the form of questioning former loyalties and forging new alliances. With a new deadline ticking, she has to right a terrible wrong, save her friends, and solve the mystery of an impending Dreg attack. This book is fast-paced with action at every turn, keeping you on your toes until the very end.
It was still a good book, but I know it wasn't as good as the first because it took me quite some time to complete it. I read the first book in one evening. It took me over a week to complete this one. It seemed to bounce around a lot and didn't complete half of the tasks that were the focus of the storyline. There was no closure. Eve spent most of the book injured or healing from an injury. It seemed there was little romance or direction. When it ended I felt like there was much more that needed to be told. I liked the new characters and hope we hear more from them but they should have been developed a bit more.
I had been searching for a new series to read and had tried 3 other samples before I found this one. Great characters, very twisty storyline! Love it!
I read some of the reviews of this book and was surprised to find most were not good. Not sure what those people read but this book was just as good as the first. I finished it in a day. If you like a spunky heroine with magic, diverse characters, witty comments and emotional scenes, you will love this series.
The follow-up to Three Days to Dead left me a bit dissatisfied & somewhat disappointed. The beginning of the story dragged a bit and it took a lot for me to hang in there through the end. But I'm glad I did, because it did seem to pickup a bit towards the end. Not a bad story but definitely not as captivating as the first. This author also seems to be in the camp that believes a realized romance will lead to reader disinterest. As always the writing was spot-on, but the editing, the back & forth with the romance, and slow parts could really have used some work.
Having said that all, I will definitely read the next book in the series; Another Kind of Dead. Due out July 26, 2011.
This was another solid book in the series. The story continued nicely from book 1. Book 2 answers some questions and gives you more to keep you hooked. Eva continues to be a smart, strong, and capable woman. The pacing was excellent and I look forward to future books.
After reading book 1, I purchased all the series....you can't read just one......"it's like eating potato chips". Once you have a taste of one you've have to have more.
