Dead Tropics Sue Edge Books

Great book. Nothing new in the zombie genre but nothing done bad either. Very exciting. Extremely fast paced and relentless action. Look forward to more from the author.

I have read quite a few zombie books and plan on reading quite a few more. This is one of my favorites. I really liked the tone of her book. She does a really good job of bringing you into the world without having to use a lot of time describing it. The plot is very standard for a zombie novel. For example, Lori, the main character is a nurse working in a hospital when an unknown virus shows up. I think that is part of the reason I enjoyed Sue's writing so much. At the beginning, I thought here we go again but then by about 5% through I realized it could be one of the best zombie books I ever read.

The story has heart. It is a tale of a mother having to protect her family from the zombie apocalypse (very simplified summary on my part). She has friends family and co-workers that she has to ensure the safety of. And as cliched as it sounds, she learns a lot about the person she was before the virus. One small touch that I really liked was the faith of the lead character. It seemed that the two or three times she secretly prayed for something, it worked out for her (no spoiler, nothing to do with the ending or plot). I've read plenty of books where the character usually either scoffs at or "evolves" past their faith and intentionally or not, this was far from the case in this book.

The action is the best part of the book. Sue has a great way of writing both the action scenes and the few and far between quite touching moments. This book is deeply engrossing and entertaining. Great read, highly recommend! If you are a zombie fan like I am and haven't read this one you are missing one of the best.

Dead Tropics Sue Edge Books Reviews

What a treat this book is! From the first, the characters are appealing and 3 dimensional - you immediately begin to care about these people. Lots of twists and turns - a few surprises - action, and while YES there IS gore, it's within the parameters of what you'd expect, and nothing gratuitous or overly drawn out. I am also SO thrilled to read a book where 9/10 into the story the characters are not STILL agonising over 'having to kill a child/friend/person' (sorry, pet peeve of mine). I also rather enjoyed the rare treat of being shown how life is going on unaware in other sections of the city even as the tragedy is unfolding (having to actually RENT a car - brilliant!!!).

I highly recommend this great book - one of the few I can honestly say I didn't want to end. Fully fleshed (at least before the zombies get to them) characters, LIKABLE people - I found myself genuinely CARING what happened to the characters.

Ms. Edge - I am going to give you the highest compliment I can pay an author - I WANT MORE!!! Also I am buying the paper copy to supplement my one - it's THAT good.
I had passed this book by a few times before finally giving it a shot. I downloaded the sample and was immediately engrossed. I wasn't sure what to expect, the zombie genre is dominated by male heroes. But, Edge made her female lead a kick-butt type on par with characters from other books. This was a great read. The writing was adult and the story was engaging. The characters were also interesting and you cared for them. I read someone else's review and agreed (a tad) with their assessment of there being ALOT of action (sometimes too much of a good thing can sometimes be bad). But, it didn't turn me off to the book at all. My one complaint, which would go along with that other review, was all the action inevitably led to vehicles being discarded left and right. The characters didn't stay in a vehicle for more then 20 mins, something else would happen that would make them need to flee. Again. But, that complaint is minor compared to all the strengths in this book. For any male reader who may be hesitant to get a book with a female lead worrying about her kids.....don't be deterred, you will love this character in the same vain as males from Mad Swine, Year of the Dead and LZR 1143.
...What's not to love? Set in Cairns, Australia, Dead Tropics was a fun read from beginning to end, with a likable heroine as the protagonist, and yes, kids die too! Some homages to well-known zombie movies without being overly derivative ... and yes, crocodiles! Okay, the latter weren't a big part of the book, but I was happy they were there at all since part of the action takes place in water near mangroves and I am fascinated by Australia's diverse collection of poisonous/deadly critters, both in and out of the water. Honestly I think the author could had had even more fun with the perils of nature as well as the zombies, but that might just be my own personal interests talking.

The heroine was an interesting mix of compassion and pragmatism, sometimes able and willing to rescue other people not in her immediate circle of friends and family, and at other times is realistic enough to realize that to try would be futile.

Nothing about this book shouted (or even whispered) "self-published" and I hope the author's time and obvious care for quality continues through all of her books, which I plan on making a point of reading even if she raises the price. 99 cents was a steal.

The only reason this is four stars instead of five is there were a few points where the heroine's emotional response to certain events (no spoilers!) didn't quite satisfy me...but all in all a damn good read.
