When I was young, going to the Catholic church, I thought that angels were real physical beings that could appear at any time, that heaven was just as much of a physical place as was my grandma's house. Over the course of my life, my views have changed a lot.... but what made They Who Fell so interesting is that he took that idea of the angels being real physical beings and ran with it and created an incredibly gripping story!

This book has two stories that merge into one.... one story is a young woman named Jana that lives in a tower for the angels. She is a slave, as are all the other humans who reside there. While she is serving the angels we get to see very different sides of them. And just like humans, there seem to be some of them that are good and some that are evil. But Jana has been trained to do what she is told to do without question, and she has a teeny rebellious streak in her. Her story as she gets to know a couple of the angels was riveting. The first time she saw a garden and the stars was my favorite scene....
The other story was about a group of humans that are on a mission to kill the angels that have slaughtered and enslaved the human race... fighting their way across the land while they plot to take them all out.

This was an really unique story and really fun to read. The ending was absolutely epic and left you really wanting more. I will be on the look out for more from this author.

Kevin Kneupper is a bit of a Twitter hero at the moment and I bought his book as a way to say thank you to him. I didn't anticipate enjoying it so much, but I seriously did.

The story is set in a world after the second war in heaven when a band of rebel angels has fallen to earth. In this world, humans are subjugated and divided into groups of collaborators and resisters.

Primarily, the story is told from two points of view Jana and William, although we do get different characters' perspectives in the book from time to time. Both Jana and William are on opposing sides of the war.

Jana is a servant at a place called The Perch - the angels' stronghold - and viewed by outsiders as those who have collaborated with angels. She captures the eye of an angel and is sent from the lowly ranks of servants up into the top echelons. As the servant of one of the angels, Jana is thrust into the ruthless world of politics where humans can be broken at any moment.

On the other hand, William is with the resistance living a life on the run fighting both angels and their human collaborators.

Events bring the two main points of view in the story together with world changing consequences. I can't wait to read book two.

This is a compelling story and told at a breakneck pace. I couldn't stop turning pages to find out what happened.

I've seen some of the other reviews saying that there is a lot of telling and it's true. There is, but in saying that, I think it works in this story. The characters are closed off and have to keep their thoughts to themselves because treachery is one wrong word away. I thought the narrative style actually suited the atmosphere of the story.

Interesting concept but to much "tell" and not enough "show." This book needs less narrative and more dialogue. It needs a better presentation of the back-story, and frankly, needs to give me someone to care about.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered this book, but I had enjoyed Kevin's Cade Crowley series and I liked the synopsis, so I decided to give it a read. I couldn't be more pleased with taking a chance on a new series! This book is different from the typical fantasy fiction and paranormal fiction that I read, in that angels have fallen to earth, but they are not the benevolent creatures we have come to know and love. They are disgraced and disgraceful. They are like children in so many ways, spoiled and mercurial. They are scarred inside and out and they have taken over the world. The people the angels once served, as miracle-workers, guardian angels, and warriors, are now their slaves, servants to their whims and their desires, which range from degradation to physical torture. Some of the angels are worse than others, but none of them seem to have much tolerance for the human race in general. A large chunk of humanity has thrown in its lot with the angels, in exchange for certain freedoms. These Vichies, as they are called, made up of the dregs of what is left of society, provide the angels with goods and a continued supply of servants. They rally under a white flag, which I found particularly amusing since white is so indicative of innocence and peace, and they do not hesitate to betray and/or kill their own kind if they think it will gain them something.

I found the story incredibly fascinating, as seen through the eyes of an innocent young woman who was brought to the angels' stronghold, The Tower, too young to even remember what it was like on the outside. Jana is swept up into the angel's politics and intrigues, as well as the higher caste of servants she has to deal with once she is taken from the kitchens to the upper levels to serve a half-mad angel named Nefta. Jana becomes captivated with the angel Rhamiel who appears to be different than the other angels, as he also becomes captivated with her. However, the book doesn't solely focus on Jana and The Tower. Human rebels are fighting back against the angels and their plans involve bringing down The Tower.

I truly enjoyed reading this book. It is vastly different from any of books I have read to date. Humans tend to think of angels as benevolent beings...and they were...but when they "Fell," they seemed to have lost their compassion for the human race. The author created an angelic caste system of sorts, as well as his own idea of angelic politics. I was enthralled and couldn't help but barrel through the book to see where the next page took me.

The only problem I have with Kevin's books is that there seems to be a lack of decent character descriptions. If he never described them, that would be fine because I have a vivid imagination, however I'd be 3/4 of the way through the book and then realize, "Oh he just said that angel has long, blonde hair," when I had been picturing that angel with short, dark hair. I personally do not feel that character descriptions are a waste of space...I actually feel that they are vital to telling the story. Being a visual person myself, I need those descriptions, because I play out the story in my head while I am reading it...and getting a description rather late in the game throws off my entire mental scenario.

I really did not think I would like a book about this, however I was not disappointed. This book gripped me from the first chapter . Jana is a slave to the Angels who fell and live at the Perch. One Angel starts to pay special attention to Jana. Rhamiel is one of the highest angels at the Perch , he notices Jana but isn’t sure what to make of it at first. There is also a group of humans who want to kill the angels . This story is filled with so much , it keeps you on your toes page after page. I can’t even begin to tell you how great it is .
