The Manifest Delusions series has been one of my favorites since Beyond Redemption first came out.
I am not normally a fan of the grimdark genre, or overly violent sword and sorcery type fantasy, but Fletcher manages to infuse his world and his characters with so much life and originality that I could hardly put these books down.
The depictions of mental illnesses as physical manifestations is unique, and well researched. The premise could easily feel cheap and shallow, but Fletcher has managed to capture the essence of these illnesses, and how people afflicted with them might actually feel.

I was skeptical going into this book as it is in the same world, but not directly related to the first two novels - which left some large plot threads unfinished - and wondered if the author could bring the same sympathy and magic to brand new characters. (Something that can't be easy with such damaged, sometimes evil, and downright insane characters.)
I shouldn't have worried, because in the first few pages I was fully invested in the new characters.

A worthy addition to the series, and an absolute must read.
The ending of this book has stuck with me. I still think about it months after reading the book. I initially thought I disliked the ending, but I've come to realize that this book absolutely masterfully leads you down one path, gets your guard down, and reveals you've been deluding yourself along with some of the characters. It's not a happy story, for the most part, but it's ultimately quite perfect.

Swarm and Steel Michael R Fletcher 9781940456898 Books Reviews

I recieved a copy of this book, not for the review, but for a song; thankfully, a tap dance was not necessary, as I'm not very good at it and plus, I don't have the required shoes anymore. No worries, I only do honest reviews anyways. I have read one of Fletcher's previous works, Beyond Redemption. I greatly enjoyed both novels. They are amazing flights of fancy with a "magic system" based upon real life psychological disorders, and great fun as the characters' manifested delusions wreak havok upon their own persons and that of others. Another focus that the Manifest Delusions Series (this is the third in the series and first standalone) places great emphasis on is religion, and the dynamic between the deluded, the sane, and the deities that watch over them (or don't) from the "other side," which Fletcher refers to quite creatively as the Afterdeath rather than the Afterlife ... which makes more sense. There are new Geisteskranken, new cultures, new tribes, new towns and cities, all are on display. The story begins with one Zerfall Seele, a powerful Gehfahrgeist or sociopath, wounded in an alley in the greed-driven city of Geld. Everyone is trying to kill her, her sword is missing and she doesn't know why. And that's just the beginning, as a narrative four hundred years in the making relates her story, that of her old boyfriend Aas, that of her new boyfriend Jateko, that of her sister Holle and that of her sister Holle's clone of her, Pharisaer. Needless to add, things get a bit crazy as the interested parties war over the powerful church that the two sisters created so many years ago. If anything, the overarching world takes on even more personality in Swarm and Steel than it did in Beyond Redemption; the rabbit hole goes ever deeper as the reader is treated to the philosophies and deities of multiple societies, some savage and some supposedly civilized, before it literally veers straight into hell. Like one of the protagonists in this novel, Fletcher's world keeps growing and growing as he shines a great spotlight on a different angle of it in each work.
The book was very dark. I read halfway before I was too depressed to continue. Everyone is evil in the book. I was waiting for redemption and it never transpired in what I read.
Swarm and Steel is a twisted and weirdly beautiful love story set in a world where the delusions of the insane literally shape reality. We follow the journey of Zerfall and Jateko, two Geisteskranken - those who suffer these delusions - as they attempt to dismantle the Täuschung, a religion that wrongfully imprisons the souls of the masses in a hell named Swarm. Zerfall has created this hell through her delusions and now a fragment of her mind rules over its administration. It is her goal to stop the filth at its core. Jateko will do whatever it takes to remain by her side, even if it heaves him deeper into madness.

This tale is technically a standalone in the author’s Manifest Delusions universe, and while it isn’t necessary to read the main novels in the series in order to fully enjoy this, I highly recommend you do. Fletcher has created some of the most unique, albeit utterly disturbing, dark fantasy stories in the industry, most of which has gone straight to my favorites shelf, and this book is no exception. It’s vile. It’s hilarious. It’s emotional. It’s cringeworthy. It’s thought-provoking. It’s beautiful. There’s death (lots of it). And life (and focus on how precious it is). Lastly, the ending is perfection.

I highly recommend!
Mr. Fletcher is as brutal as ever with his characters. This man has hate in his heart.
So this author has been blowing me away. Love the entire concept, though I think it takes a special brain to fully explore it. Don't know if anyone besides Fletcher could do this so well. Just kept getting better and was certainly never predictable.
And as usual the characters were awesome. Tod had me smiling regularly. Then feeling unclean about said feeling shortly thereafter. HAHAHA
GREAT book from a great author. Probably the first author and second book I'd recommend out of everything I've read. Hopefully he'll stick with this system, the mental aspect is killer
